What is tenrikyo
in a nutshell?

Tenrikyo is a religion founded in 19th century Japan, when Miki Nakayama, became the Shrine of God. As the Shine of God, she is known as Oyasama.

Through Oyasama, God revealed that It is the God of Origin, the God in Truth, and, that It created humans, as our Parent, through tremendous effort. The reason God made such effort was to create a relationship between It and humans that would bring joy to both.

The creation of humans occurred at a place we refer to as the “Jiba,” which is located in what is currently known as Tenri, Japan. It was at the Jiba that God set into motion the hope that humans will all live the “Joyous Life,” what some may liken to a heaven on earth. Humans’ achieving the Joyous Life would bring great joy to God Itself.

Humans are still learning how to achieve, and hopefully working toward achieving the Joyous Life. Oyasama teaches us that the proper use of our minds, including helping others with brotherly and sisterly love is one of the most basic ways toward the Joyous Life.

Tenrikyo, with its message of hope and joy resonates with many and has spread beyond Japan. It has established followings in communities around the world. Tenrikyo churches and centers serve as places of worship, spiritual practice, and community activities for its members, fostering a sense of fellowship and belonging among followers.

Overall, Tenrikyo promotes a message of universal love, harmony, and spiritual awakening, seeking to bring joy and fulfillment to the lives of not just its members, but also to society as a whole.
